“Is it safe?” Tommy asks looking up to his brother.

Alex doesn’t respond, instead his eyes find the oldest of the trio.

Tim smiles down at both of them, “Don’t know, but we are going to find out.”

Tim takes a careful step onto the suspension bridge. The ropes groan under his weight, but he makes it across and disappears into the stone opening. He turns to his siblings and gestures for them to follow before turning and with a step disappears into the shadows.

Alex glances down at Tommy.

Tommy stares back at the way they came. The forest is filled with gloom and danger.

“Come on Tommy, let’s go!” Alex sprints across the traverse. The wood creaking as if on the verge of snapping in two and the ropes swaying dangerously from side to side. On the other side, he also disappear inside the dark portal.

Tommy stands alone now. The fear of the unknown pressing on his five year old shoulders. A dog howls, maybe the Myers’ mutt, but he can’t be certain. It’s all the little boy needs to follow after his brothers. He tiptoes across the abyss as if miles stretch below him.

With a lingering look over his shoulder he also steps into the unknown.

I call NYC home and wish the subway went everywhere and Times Square didn't suck. I saw John Turturro once. Maybe it was him. He was wearing a yellow shirt and smiled at me like he knew I knew. I am an Army vet who writes. I like characters who want more then they deserve. I like genre fiction. I love space. I love paladins. One day I might write a paladin in space story. Just you wait. The university of South Florida spit me out with a degree in creative writing and I find myself questioning the sanity of going to a school that advertises a fake beach on its brochure ever since. I intuit grammar. I Got married in 2012 We had twins in 2015. I do a lot of cooking and dog walking and ranting about the unfairness of sentience.
